PillCam Capsule Endoscopy Device

The PillCam Capsule Endoscopy Devices include the following versions: Pillcam M2A, PillCam SB, PillCam SB2, PillCam ESO, PillCam ESO2, PillCam COLON 2, and PillCam Patency (Given Imaging, Inc.). These devices are ingestible devices utilized in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Peristalsis moves the PillCam Capsule smoothly and painlessly throughout the gastrointestinal tract, transmitting color video images or these products are used to assess other aspects GI function. The procedure allows patients to continue daily activities during the examination.

The PillCam Capsule Endoscopy Device has been utilized to diagnose diseases of the small intestine including Crohn’s Disease, celiac disease and other malabsorption disorders, benign and malignant tumors of the small intestine, vascular disorders and medication related small bowel injuries.

MRI Information

The User Manual for the PillCam Capsule Endoscopy Device states:

“Undergoing an MRI while the capsule is inside the patient’s body may result in serious damage to his/her intestinal tract or abdominal cavity. If the patient did not positively verify the excretion of the PillCam Capsule from his/her body, he/she should contact the physician for evaluation and possible abdominal X-ray before undergoing an MRI examination.”

This information applies to all versions/models of the PillCam devices.
