Dressings Containing Silver and MRI Procedures: Aquacel AG

Aquacel Ag (ConvaTec, Skillman, New Jersey) is a dressing that contains ionic silver, which combines the antibacterial action of silver with a barrier dressing that utilizes Hydrofiber technology (E.R. Squibb & Sons, LLC, New Brunswick, NJ) to absorb large amounts of wound exudate without requiring frequent dressing changes.

Nyenhuis and Duan (2009) evaluated MRI issues for this dressing at 1.5- and 3-Tesla. Based on the findings, the Aquacel Ag wound dressing impregnated with ionic silver was reported to be “MR safe” (i.e., an item that poses no known hazards in all MRI environments), particularly since it exhibited magnetic and electric properties similar to human tissues. Therefore, an Aquacel Ag dressing may be left in place in a patient undergoing an MRI procedure.
